We decided to raise Barred Rock pullets, again. We have found them to be the best foragers, layers, and friendliest bird. The Speckled Sussex are going to a new home, as they just don't lay as well as Barred Rocks. Our Barred Rocks consistently lay throughout the winter, without missing a beat. We have south facing windows in the coop, but no other supplemental lighting. These gals also are meatier than traditional egg layers, so if we get an accidental roo in the bunch, we will send him to freezer camp. Hands down, the Barred Plymouth Rocks have become our favorite chicken.
I have barred rocks high on my list, too. Cute little peeps!
ReplyDeleteI like the Barred Rocks also, but I also have found the Austrolorp (sp?) is a very good layer also, and they are as big as the barred rocks.
ReplyDeleteI don't have barred rocks anymore, unfortunately. I really enjoyed having them and will probably choose them if I do order more chicks in the future. I've been raising mixed breed mutts lately...so much fun to see the variety of colors and feather patterns.
ReplyDeleteThanks for posting the video of little fuzz balls :) I should have some in just a bit more than a week...the incubator is full of multi-colored eggs right now.
I've wondered about the Australorps, Carolyn. I may give a few a shot, if I can get them locally. Lisa, I would love to have an incubator and hatch my own. It's on my "to do someday" list. :)
